Wine Regions: The Loire Valley

Posted 05 Mar 2019

One of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Loire Valley is commonly known as one of the birthplaces of the Renaissance. Peppered along the winding river Loire and lush, green landscape are the many architectural triumphs which are the noble Châteaux, numbering more than 300, each with its own unique character and beauty.

The Loire Valley is one of the worlds most renowned wine regions with archaeological evidence suggesting that there have been vineyards in the Loire Valley since the 1st Century when France was known as Gaul. The majority of the white wine produced is made with the Chenin Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc grape whilst the red wines of the area are made with the Cabernet Franc grape.

The Loire Valley is also the largest source of white wine in France with superb Chenin Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc wines such as a dry Sancerre or delicate Vouvray, perfect for pairing with the fresh fish from the river.

The Loire Valley prides itself on its cuisine; specialities such as Fouace, a regional bread that can be found in the Loire restaurants, is perfectly paired with Rillettes, a shredded pork dish, similar to pâté. The restaurants of the Loire often sell fresh fish such as brème and serve them in a beautiful beurre blanc, a delicate buttery sauce.

Our Châteaux of the Loire tour will have you meandering along the beautiful river Vienne through medieval towns such as Chinon or cycling to rustic, ancient fishing villages and marvelling at the beautiful châteaux along the way.
