Your Cycling Holiday in Catalonia

Classic | A Taste of Catalonia | Self-Guided

Take a dive into the rich culture and history of Catalonia on this leisurely cycling experience. The region has a fascinating history, as well as gorgeous architecture and wonderful scenery. A Taste of Catalonia is all about immersing yourself in the region, enjoying a taste of the Catalonian culture and history.

Along the way, you’ll learn just how much the region treasures Dalí, whose artistic and cultural footprint is felt in everything. Museums and even castles contain his many works, and they’re a joy to visit and see. You’ll even stop at his own castle, dedicated to his wife, which is filled with lesser-known works of his. This tour also has wine tastings and food market visits, to give you a wider experience of the Catalan culture. The traditional food pairs perfectly with local wines, so be sure to sample as much as you can.

We love

Visiting Dalí’s castle museum as well as the ancient Greco-Roman ruins of Empúries.

Day 1 | Arrive in Figueres

Head to your accommodation in Figueres which is a lovely family-run hotel. Dinner will be in the hotel restaurant tonight, where Salvador Dalí was a regular guest.

Meals included: dinner

Day 2 | Round Trip: Perallada Wine Trail | Distance: 31km / 19.3 miles

Today is a circular route through the wine region of Peralada. Along the way, you’ll stop off at castles and convents before arriving at Castello Perallada’s degustacion centre and La Vinyeta, which also produces amazing olive oil. In the late afternoon, pedal to the Dalí museum where the crowds have usually dispersed at this time of day. Inside are thousands of objects dating from different periods in Dalí's colourful life.

Meals included: breakfast

Day 3 | Ancient Greco-Roman ruins of Empuries | Distance: 43km / 26.7 miles

Set off this morning towards Torroella de Montgri via the countryside and the pretty coastal paths of Sant Marti. Stop for lunch after visiting the famous ruins of Empuries, one of the most fascinating archaeological sites in Europe, dating back to 530 BC. The museum has an amazing collection of perfectly preserved Greek urns, plates and jewellery.

Tonight you will stay in the Moli Del Mig in Torroella de Montgri, where you will be based for the next two nights. This is a luxury 15th-century mill restored by the architect Josep M. Deulofeu. A three-course dinner with wines from Emporda will be served at the Hotel’s excellent restaurant.

Meals included: breakfast & dinner

Day 4 | Gala Dalí Castle House-Museum | Distance: 52km / 31.7 miles

The route today will take you through pretty medieval villages past fields of sunflowers and orchards to Pubol Castle. In 1970 Salvador Dalí bought the castle as a gift for his wife, Gala. It is full of original works, furniture, sculptures, and paintings, all designed by Dalí. We love this museum - it is so personal and even displays some of Gala’s original haute couture dresses that were designed for her by Christian Dior.

You will then continue on to the market town of La Bisbal, which is famous for its ceramics. Here you can visit some of the workshops, including the wonderful Ponderosa; run by two sisters, they make everything themselves and you can watch how some of their ceramics are created.

Return to the hotel late afternoon and then head out to explore this lively little town, perhaps for a pre-dinner drink.

Meals included: breakfast

Day 5 | Medieval Villages to the Coast | Distance: 37km / 23 miles

You set off from Torroella, passing the rice fields of Arros de Moli de Pals before stopping to explore the perfectly preserved hilltop medieval town of Pals. The old quarter, known as El Pedro within the medieval walls, contains many historic buildings. There is a gothic church at the centre surrounded by beautiful cobbled streets leading to the old castle. The views from the ancient wall to the sea are spectacular. Just out of Torrent there is a vineyard worthy of a visit called Mas Oller, which produces some excellent wines highly recommended in the Penin Wine Guide.

Next cycle over to Palafrugell and stop at Casa Serra; admire the kitsch window display of cakes and pop downstairs to the old kitchens, now a wine cellar, with over 1,000 wines to choose from. The speciality is the selection of sweet wines which complement the amazing cakes and homemade ice cream. There is an option to book a wine and produce tasting here. We recommend a menu de dia at Les Palmeres for lunch which has great food and is fantastic value.

Your next stop is the lively town of Palamos where you will spend the next two nights staying in a stunning location overlooking the port and the beach.

Meals included: breakfast

Day 6 | Castells Beach, Wine Tasting & Fish Market | Distance 12km / 7.5 miles

This morning you can take the coastal path to one of the last unspoilt beaches on the Costa Brava. Cycle along to the port, visit the maritime museum and watch the fishermen bring in their catch of the day. In the afternoon you can visit a small local wine producer where you can taste the wine after a tour.

If you’d like to stay in Palamos for the day, there’s lots to explore. The town has a rich fishing history, so expect countless restaurants filled with fresh food. Water sports and activities in the sea can also be arranged today.

Meals included: breakfast

Day 7 | We say Adéu as you head home.
