Your Cycling Holidays in Provence

Classic | Avignon & Côtes du Rhône| Self Guided

Day 1 | Arrive at Avignon or Marseille and head to your hotel in St-Remy

Relax by the pool, enjoy a glass (or bottle) from the hotels well stocked cellar and relax, ready to start your cycling on day 2.

Day 2 | Cycle St-Remy to L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue | Distance 29 miles (46km)

Your first day on the bike takes you out of St-Remy and into the Luberon valley. Enjoy a nice easy ride to get things started for the week, starting off through the orchards on the edge of town before passing Cavaillon, the gateway to the Luberon. Turn north here and head up to the spectacular village of Fontaine-de-Vaucluse, home to Europe’s largest freshwater spring, before the final few kilometres to l’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue. Known as the Venice of Provence, the picturesque town is criss-crossed by canals and is one of our favourite spots in Provence. Relax in your hotel with a delicious dinner and a good night's sleep ahead of the next day's ride.

Day 3 | Cycle l’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue to Mazan | Distance 15 miles (25km)

Leave the Luberon behind and head towards the famous Cotes du Ventoux wine region today. With only 15 miles to cover, take a leisurely morning to explore the canal side boutiques before setting off. The nice villages of Velleron and Pernes-les-Fontaines are on the route to Mazan and offer handy stops for a mide ride coffee and cake. Upon arriving in Mazan, check in to your hotel, the former home of the Marquis de Sade. The pool and wine cellar here may tempt you into parking the bikes up for the day, but an optional loop to the village of Bedoin is available for those looking to cover a few more miles.

Day 4 | Cycle Mazan to Chateauneuf-du-Pape | Distance 22 miles (36km)

Today starts with a short ride into the town of Carpentras, a real treasure trove for lovers of history and architecture. As you pass through, keep an eye out for the Port d’Orange, the fortress ruins and the Hotel Dieu in particular. From Carpentras you pick up the Via Venassia cycle path for an easy, traffic-free stretch taking you to the village of Jonquieres. A short spin further down the road lies Courthezon, where a quick stop for coffee will give keep you topped up for the last stretch through vineyards to your spectacular hotel on the outskirts of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. The owners are also winemakers, so be sure to taste some of their produce during your stay.

Day 5 | Optional Round Trip: Orange | Distance 21 miles (35km)

There’s time today to explore this charming village, built at the base of its fortress remains, overlooking the plain of Comtat and endless vineyards. Most importantly, there are wine tastings offered on virtually every street corner. If you’re itching for a ride, why not take the route up to the spectacular Roman ruins of Orange, once the Roman’s capital of the region.

Day 6 | Chateauneuf-du-Pape to Avignon | Distance 17 miles (30km)

From the hillside, we drop down into the Rhone valley and take a flat route loosely following the rivers path. We advise pushing on and making the most of an afternoon to explore Avignon, perhaps starting with a visit to the Papal palace. The city is a marvellous mix of history and contemporary culture, equally famous for its papal history as it’s annual arts festival that attracts performers from all over the world.

Day 7 | Cycle Avignon to St-Remy-de-Provence | 35 miles (56km)

The last leg of the cycle takes you back to where it all began, the classy streets of St-Remy-de-Provence. The ride takes you further south along the Rhone river, before turning off at the twin towns of Beaucaire and Tarascon. We love pulling up by the harbour in Beaucaire for a bite to eat along the way – watching the boats come and go. The final stretch into St-Remy is nice and flat, perfect for this stage of the holiday – but those wanting a few more miles can take an extension up to the spectacular hilltop citadel of Les-Baux for stunning views of the region. Celebrate your cycling with a final supper in St-Remy.

Day 8 | We say au revoir

Trip extensions are available upon request.

  • Château de Mazan, Mazan

    4 star

This is a château hotel surrounded by a fabulous garden.  Once home of the notorious Marquis de Sade, the 17th century château while being 4* luxury feels relaxed and homely.  In a small Provençal village, at the base of Mont Ventoux, the highest mountain in Provence, the views are magnificent and the scenery stunning.  The terrace is used for summer dining, so you can enjoy your gastronomic dinners listening to the cicadas and if very lucky, a nightingale. The hotel swimming pool is situated in the landscaped gardens and there is also a floral terrace.

  • Château des Fines Roches, Chateauneuf-du-Pape

    4 star

Located in the heart of the prestigious vineyards of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, this turreted castle built in the late 19th century was inhabited by the Marquis de Baroncelli and frequented by many Provencal poets. The landscapes here are breath-taking, with the peak of Mont Ventoux jutting out of the vast Provencal plains and the seemingly endless rows of grapes stretching out to the horizon. The peace and quiet is only broken by the clink of wine glasses.
