Wine Regions: Côtes du Rhône

Posted 30 Apr 2019

The Côtes du Rhône wine region is located in northwestern Provence and is most famous for the incredible wine that it produces. The region straddles the wonderful Rhône River and is made up of little villages, towns and vineyards.

Avignon

The region’s main commune is Avignon; a beautiful city located on the banks of the river. Avignon is filled with beautiful architecture and medieval monuments such as the Palais des Papes and Pont d’Avignon. It is also a centre for cyclists; the city has 110km of cycle paths in and around the city making it exceptionally easy to get around.

Pont du Gard

As you potter from one idyllic city to another, you will find many of the beautiful, ancient monuments that are peppered around the region. One example is the Pont du Gard; an ancient Roman aqueduct, almost 300 metres long, that crosses the Gardon River and is still in immaculate condition.

Wines of Cote du Rhone

This region is most celebrated for its wines. The Côtes du Rhône is the second largest wine region in France and has exceptional red wines; 89% of the wine produced here is red. The region’s best wines are its bold Syrahs, full-bodied Grenache blends and magnificent Mourvèdre. One famous place worth stopping by is Châteauneuf-du-Pape; a charming little medieval village with an old fortress. The commune is known for producing some of the most renowned wines in the Rhône Valley.

Olive Tapenade

There are incredible culinary treats to pair with the wines too. Try a rich black olive tapenade; brilliant with a rosé. Or dine on an exceptional Poulet d’Avignon; a classic wine and cream chicken dish. Indulge on the famed apricot and goats cheese tarts; a sweet savoury treat often found in patisseries during the summer months.
