Suggested Cycle Rides
Bike Ride 1 | The Wine Road | Distance 24 miles (38km)
This gentle round trip cycle heads south from Villa di Piazzano towards the famous Montepulciano vineyards. The route takes you to one of the region’s best known and favourite vineyards, Avignonesi, which is steeped in history, tradition and of course wondrous wines. The magnificent estate has introduced organic and biodynamic winemaking methods, producing the superb Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. A tour of the vineyard and lunch is highly recommended and can be organised by your local representative.
Bike Ride 2 | Lake Trasimeno & Hannibal | Distance 25 miles (40km)
This ride will take you to Italy’s fourth largest lake, Lake Trasimeno and to the lakeside town of Passignano. On route, you will pass through idyllic Tuscan countryside and the historic battlefield where Hannibal staged his famous ambush of the Roman army in 217 BC. Having conquered the alps, Hannibal set a trap for the Romans in a natural amphitheatre just below Tuoro sul Trasimeno, now tranquil and dotted with silver-green olive groves. From Passignano, you’ll take the ferry (payable locally) to Isola Maggiore with your bike for lunch on shore at one of the lovely restaurants such as our favourite Ristorante L’Oso. Then it’s on to Tuoro on the ferry and back to your Villa, via the ancient dogana (customs) post where a sign reveals a fascinating list of famous people who have passed through the arches.
Bike Ride 3 | Castles and Churches of the Umbria and Tuscany Border | Distance 28 miles (45km)
Enjoy cycling along the Niccone Valley, where Tuscany meets Umbria, which has acted as a thoroughfare and frontier for centuries. The area is dotted with castles, churches and ancient monasteries such as the Castle of Lisciano Niccone and the remarkable Pierle Castle, which overlooks Mercantale di Cortona. The wide valley plays host to stories of St.Francis of Assisi and the Grand Duchy of Tuscany amongst others.

We highly recommend the half board package so you can enjoy gourmet meals at the Vila di Piazzano. However, if you prefer to eat out, your local representative can suggest local restaurants and organise taxis for you. Please note that the restaurant at Vila di Piazzano is closed on Tuesdays.
Dating back to 1464, the Villa di Piazzano is an elegant Historic Estate set on the border between Umbria and Tuscany. Cardinal Silvio Passerini originally built the villa as a hunting lodge which has now been lovingly restored into a luxurious hotel. It is located close to Cortona, tucked away in beautiful Italian countryside and a protected natural reserve. This family run hotel has an elegant swimming pool, landscaped gardens, wine cellar and a terrace with panoramic views. The lovely restaurant specialises in serving Tuscan cuisine using fresh local ingredients. The chef and sommelier host wine tasting and pasta making lessons for our guests on this fabulous single centre break. (Please note that the restaurant is closed on Tuesdays).
