Day 1 | Arrive in Gubbio
Gubbio is a wonderful medieval town. Its Colle Eletto cable car climbs to Mount Ingino, with the 5-naved Sant’Ubaldo Basilica and views of the Apennines Mountains. In town, Gubbio Cathedral contains 16th-century paintings and a baroque chapel. At your hotel you’ll have a welcome meeting and the walking routes and logistics for the week will be fully explained.
Day 2 | Circular walk from Gubbio in the surrounding hills | Distance 10 miles (16km) | Elevation +800m (cable car ride)
Today you're up to Madonna della Cima, which is a pass sat at 778m. Your glorious walk will include the funivia (cable car), the village of Monte Ingino and time to explore the wonderful medieval city of Gubbio. Please note that the last section of the walk is quite a steep descent. Gubbio was home to St Francis. It is where he tamed a local wolf that was terrorising the local population and from where he set out to live a more simple life.
Day 3 | Walk from Gubbio to Biscina | Distance 13.5 miles (22km) | Elevation +416m / -353m.
You will start your walk from Gubbio passing by the little church of Vittorina and following a straight road across the flat countryside. The trail will then wind uphill through pretty woods to Valdichiascio (650m). Take your time to explore the nearby Abbey of Vallingegno. On teh next section of the trail, you will pass the Church of Caprignone before reaching Biscina (520m), an ancient castle with a nearby agriturismo. Your accommodation for tonight in large and roomy apartments in a stunning location over-looking the castle. The Agriturismo has two pools and the lovely home cooked food is grown locally.
Day 4 | Walk from Biscina to Valfabbrica | Distance 11 miles (17.5km) | Elevation +189m / -330m.
From the hilltop town of Biscina, overlooking the artificial lake of Valfabbrica, you will follow a quiet country road over the hills that surround the lake, passing by the Pieve di Coccorano (440m) and the dam. The St Francis Way then continues downhill to
Barcaccia (270m), an ancient farmhouse where St Francis used to rest. Just past the crossroads to Ripa and Perugia, onward to the bridge over the River Chiascio, then up to Valfabbrica (290m). Continue a short distance along the 'Way' out of town until you arrive at Il Pioppo Agriturismo.
Day 5 | Walk from Valfabbrica to Assisi | Distance 9 miles (14.5km) | Elevation +562m / -406m.
You will leave the little town of Valfabbrica on another quiet country road and wind your way up into the hills again. Pieve San Nicolò (570m) lays less than 1 km off the trail. You will then continue gently downhill amid olive trees and vineyards and will get your first views of Assisi in the distance. Continue through the woods to an ancient stone bridge over the River Tescio then to Ponte di Santa Croce (270m) at the foot of Mount Subasio. A steep road will take you to the town gate of Porta San Giacomo and finally on to the St Francis Basilica in Assisi (370m).
Day 6 | Circular walk from Assisi | Distance 6 miles (9km)
Today is more relaxing and exploring the old town. Enjoy a circular walk of charming Assisi that will include the Basilica, tomb of St Francis and the Cathedral of San Ruffino. If you want a longer walk you can extend your route to the top of the town and the Rocca Maggiore.
Day 7 | Circular walk from Assisi to the Hermitage of St Francis | Distance 5 Miles (8km) | Elevation +390m
Your final walk takes you to the Hermitage of St Francis, the Eremo delle Carceri. Carceri is from the Latin and means 'isolated place or prison' and once you have walked to this beautiful and spiritual location you will understand how fitting this is. You can see the cells where the monks including St Francis slept. The woodland path is steep and through pretty woodland. We recommend the route up through the woods and then walking back down via the road and path. You'll spot the original drinking fountains along the route that once provided welcome relief to Pilgrims.
Day 8 | Tour ends in Assisi
After your final caffè latte this morning, we say “Arrivederci”.
Relais Ducale is the extension of the Palazzo Ducale and overlooks Piazza della Signoria, considered one of the most beautiful squares in Italy. This family-run hotel is an oasis of relaxation thanks to the verandas, a hanging garden and small seating areas. The 30 rooms at the Relais Ducale are all furnished with period furniture.
The Tenuta di Biscina agritourismo farm is a little piece of paradise. The apartments are renovated yet in keeping with the style of the old Umbrian stone farmhouses. There are two swimming pools with deck chairs, tables, umbrellas and chairs. In the restaurant you can enjoy the true taste of Umbrian food and wine - all organic and locally grown.
The rooms have views over the old medieval walls of the Castle of Valfabbrica. The Agriturismo has a rich history, in which legend has it it was both a hospital and refuge for passers-by in the Middle Ages. The name translates as 'On the steps of Francesco' and this is one of the most sought after corners of the trail. All rooms have ensuite facilities, there is a popular restaurant on site and breakfast is taken in the patisserie across the road.
The family run Hotel Ideale offers outstanding views of the valley and has a lovely garden and terrace. Teh hotel is located in Assisi, 100 yards from the San Rufino Cathedral. The majority of the rooms overlook the garden and the valley.
