France’s wealth of intricate history means that there are no two regions the same and there is always something new to discover each time you visit.
2019 is a great time to travel to France and celebrate some of the significant historical anniversaries occurring this year.
100 year anniversary of Renoir’s death
One of the great French impressionists, Pierre-Auguste Renoir was a fantastic artist who launched the Impressionist Movement and used to paint en pleine air, out in the open air, which at the time was a shocking proposition. Renoir moved to Cagnes-sur-Mer on the French Riviera in Provence during his later years and continued to paint right up until his death in 1919. The Renoir family villa is now open as a museum to the public for those who wish to see where Renoir spent the last part of his life painting. The Eau et Lumière Association, an association dedicated to obtaining recognition for the heritage and touristic value that impressionist artists have created, has declared 2019 to be Renoir Year.

The Normandy D-Day Festival will take place between the 25th May to the 16th June this year. Normandy is also home to the iconic Mont Saint Michel, a fortified island that protrudes majestically out of the sea.
500th Anniversary of the Renaissance in the Loire
2019 will mark the 500th anniversary of all things Renaissance in the Loire including the death of Leonardo Da Vinci in Amboise, the construction of the Chateau of Chambord as well as the birth of Catherine de' Medici, France's future queen who had a large influence in the Loire Valley. The Loire Valley with its beautiful river, gardens, chateaus such as Chenonceau, Close Luce and Azay-le-Rideau as well as the iconic monarchs which have resided in them has been referred to as the birthplace of the French Renaissance cradle for architectural innovation. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is also known for being a hub for artistic creation, literature and philosophy and science. Many artistic, musical and architectural celebrations will be held in the Loire Valley throughout 2019 to honour the prominent region.Back To Blog
