Meals included: None
Day 2 | Cycle Matera to Alberobello | Distance: 43 miles (70km)
Today you’ll leave Matera following quiet, country roads through glorious Apulian countryside. You’ll follow a rollercoaster route, surrounded by olive trees, as you reach the famous area of the Trulli houses. Look out for authentic houses scattered along the route, as you make your way towards Alberobello: the Trulli capital of the world. The town is today a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best preserved of its type in Europe. The 1,000 Trulli houses, many of which are still lived in, will transport you to an entirely different world.
Meals included: Breakfast & Dinner
Day 3 | Optional Round Trip: Monopoli | Distance: 40 miles (65km)
On your second day in Alberobello you will go out for a loop ride through the countryside between Alberobello and the Adriatic coast. Leaving Alberobello in the morning our route today takes you through the distinctive Puglian landscape, via Putignano and Castellana where we have the option to visit an impressive underground cave system (payable locally). On reaching the coast you arrive in the town of Monopoli, with its charming mix of Norman, Venetian-Byzantine and Arabic architecture. The old town is a perfect spot for a coffee break. From Monopoli you then loop back through the countryside to Alberobello where you will arrive with plenty of time to spare to further explore this most charming of towns.
Meals Included: Breakfast
Day 4 | Cycle Alberobello to Ostuni | Distance: 31 miles (50km)
Today you’ll be riding through the historically-rich Murgia area along quiet roads surrounded by olive groves, vineyards and traditional masserie (typical farm houses of Puglia). You’ll pass through the medieval towns of Cisternino and Locorotondo, both of which are worth jumping off your bikes to explore their centres. Cisternino has a spectacular viewpoint, from where you can see the lush Valle d‘Itria. Your destination for today is Ostuni, where you’ll spend the evening. Known as ‘La Citta Bianca‘, or the White City, Ostuni sits majestically on a hill, offering spectacular views out to the Adriatic. Spend the evening exploring Ostuni’s narrow streets within its protective walls.
Meals Included: Breakfast
Day 5 | Cycle Ostuni to Brindisi, Train to Lecce | Distance: 33 miles (55km)
Leaving Ostuni, you ride on peaceful rural roads, mostly flat through olive plantations and continue the last stretch along the Adriatic coastline towards Brindisi. Here you have time to enjoy the vibrant town and visit the sights before taking the train (payable locally) to the city of Lecce. Due to its rich Baroque architectural style, Lecce is known as the ‘Florence of the South‘. With the soft local stone easily worked with warm colours, many fine architectural decorations have been made to adorn this magnificent city.
Meals Included: Breakfast & Dinner
Day 6 | Cycle Lecce to Otranto | Distance: 37 miles (60km)
Setting off on our bikes this morning we head again south through the gnarled olive groves and the countryside of the Salento, where we’ll find traces of former Greek colonies still present in the dialect, cuisine and architecture. Weaving along a short section of the coast, we head inland riding south, reaching at the end of the day Otranto, a Greco-Roman port frequented by merchants and thrill-seekers. As we enter the old town, we will notice the remarkable wall surrounding the Castle of Otranto.
Meals Included: Breakfast
Day 7 | Cycle Otranto to Santa Maria di Leuca | Distance: 33 miles (55km)
Today is your final stretch to the heel of Italy. From Otranto you head south along the high coastal road and wind your way along the cliff tops with magnificent views along the way. On your way you will pass the well-known Grotta Zinzulusa and the village of Santa Ceserea Terme, known for its thermal baths. At the end of the day you arrive at Santa Maria di Leuca, on the southern tip of Puglia. The village is dotted with colourful and alternative ‘mansions‘, and surrounded by crystal clear waters, where the Adriatic and the Ionian seas divide. A great way to finish your cycling holiday in Puglia.
