Historic Calvados in Normandy was the site of the D-Day landings and the following Battle of Normandy. This tour takes in the landing beaches and the sites of some of the fiercest battles, whilst also celebrating the regions rich and distinctive cultural heritage.

On this tour of contrasts, visit the emotional D-Day landing beaches and memorials, the Bayeux Tapestry, the half-timbered houses of the Pays d’Auge and the stunning seaside towns of Cabourg and Honfleur. There will be plenty of time to enjoy the regional cuisine and taste the famous Calvados and cider!

Day 1 | Arrive at Bayeux 
Check into your first hotel situated in the centre of the well preserved and historic town of Bayeux. Stroll around this delightful city full of flowers, medieval buildings and its gothic cathedral before dinner. If there is time, perhaps visit the famous Bayeux tapestry or the Commonwealth war museum. You’ll be meet your local representative for your welcome briefing and bike fit at your hotel.

Day 2 | Bayeux | Distance 23 miles (28.6km) 
Your first day of cycling is a round trip route which starts by heading North West to Omaha beach, well known as one of the WWII D-Day Normandy landing beaches. On the shore you can see the stainless-steel sculpture ‘Les Braves’ and visit the memorial museum, as well as stop at the American war cemetery of Colleville-sur-Mer. The ride will then take you back to Bayeux through the pretty fishing village of Port-en-Bessin, which is an excellent stop for a drink in the harbour.

Day 3 | Bayeux to Caen | Distance 32 miles/40 miles (52km/64.3km) 
Today you leave Bayeux travelling North along the Aure valley towards the coast and the Germany battery of Longes-sur-Mer and Gold beach. A short ride on is the artificial harbour of Arromanches, Juno beach and the Canadian Museum. A little further along is Courseulles-sur-Mer, which is an excellent place to stop and enjoy some seafood. After lunch, the route follows the little Mue Valley until you reach the village of Fontaine-Henry and its lovely chateau. Then the ride heads eastwards to the town of Benouville in the Orne Valley home to the famous Pegasus bridge. (Please note that the 4* hotel is located in Caen).

Day 4 | Benouville/Caen to Cabourg | Distance 18 miles (28km) 
If you are cycling from Caen the route follows the Orne canal up to Pegasus bridge (A further 6 miles/10km) with time to stop and see this historical point. Then from Benouville, the route passes through Ranville, the town first liberated in France and then onto the Merville battery before arriving at the chic seaside town of Cabourg. Part of the Cote Fleurie, Cabourg was built in the 19th Century and the wide sandy beach is perfect for a pre-dinner stroll.

Day 5 | Cabourg to Honfleur | Distance 27 miles (45km) 
Today you continue along the coast towards the town of Honfleur, firstly passing through Houlgate and then inland to the town of Beaumont-en-Auge with its beautiful half-timbered houses. The route then heads through the forest of St Gatien to Honfleur or you can take a longer cycle via Deauville, a seaside town on the ‘Parisian Rivera.’ Arriving in Honfleur, you will discover one of the prettiest ports in France, brimming with art and history and located where the Seine River meets the sea. Still a working port, Honfleur was once an important trading harbour and also famous for the impressionist art of Eugene Boudin. Explore the cobblestone streets, the old port, bell-tower and it superb selection of cafes and restaurants.

    Once an 18th Century post office, now a charming hotel in an excellent central location close to the Bayeux Tapestry and a 10-minute walk to the train station.

    The hotel overlooks the hippodrome racetrack in Cabourg and benefits from an indoor swimming pool and sauna. The hotel is in a tranquil location and a 10-minute walk from the town centre.

    Overlooking Honfleur’s port, this hotel has fantastic views and is only a short walk to the Eugene Boudin museum. Formally a 15th Century coach house, the rooms are individually styled and there is a spa with hot tub, sauna and treatments available on request.

    Set in a central location in Bayeux close to the Cathedral, this recently renovated hotel was once a medieval house. The rooms are stylishly decorated and there is a un terrace in the hotel’s gardens.

    Set in a former priory in the centre of Caen, this sophisticated hotel has lovely rooms, a chic restaurant, an indoor pool and a spa. Used on both standard and superior itineraries.

    This elegant hotel was once where Marcel Proust used to stay and is situated on the fabulous beach at Cabourg. The hotel has 2 restaurants, a sauna, private beach and the spacious bedrooms either face the sea front or gardens.

    This charming hotel was formally 16th Century townhouse and salt storehouse is now a stylish hotel, which overlooks the town centre and is only a short walk to the harbour.  The smart property has warmly decorated bedrooms and aspa.
