Wander through the old quarters of Laval where you will see antiquated houses, châteaux and the medieval Château de Laval that now houses a museum. During the 11th century it was the cradle of the House of Laval, one of the most powerful families in Maine and Brittany.
Birthplace of French painter Henri Rousseau, Laval is a designated town of art and history. With over 1,000 years of history, admire the ecclesiastical Laval Cathedral and Notre-Dame d’Avesnières.
The thousand-year-old citadel has a rich historical heritage. Often dubbed the town in bloom, peruse the Garden at the End of the World that overlooks the Mayenne river.
Pedal the town’s narrow streets and past mansions to the 17th-century Classical Ursuline convent, now housing a theatre. Continue to the 11th-century Romanesque Church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste that is the town’s oldest church and has an impressive crypt.
With two cows per person in Mayenne, cheeses and other dairy products feature highly in the local cuisine. Lunch at Alexandre Arnaud’s modern L’Esprit Cuisine, where plates are stylishly presented and delicious. On weekdays set lunches made with seasonal produce and à la carte menus are available.
On Tuesdays and Saturdays, pick up picnic supplies at the food market on Rue Charles Landelle. There is seasonal produce of girolle mushrooms, pumpkins, snails, cheeses and honey.
