Bike & Boat | Burgundy and the Côtes du Rhône

Day 1

Arrive in Lyon and make your own way to the boat. We recommend guests take the TGV train as Perrache station is just a 10-minute walk from the boats mooring. Settle into your cabin and enjoy a complimentary welcome cocktail before dinner onboard.

Day 2 | Optional Round Trip around Lyon and surroundings | Distance 25 miles (40km)

Your first day is all about exploring and experiencing the wonderful city of Lyon. The city has the perfect blend of a rich and colourful history and a trendy, exciting atmosphere, with very much something to interest any traveller. After exploring the city for a while, the ride takes you to the land between the Saone and Rhone rivers where you can enjoy some pristine parks and cultural highlights. Of course, you’re more than welcome to explore on foot if you would prefer. Back on board you will have an evening cruise towards Vienne.

Day 3 | Cycle to Andance | Distance 26 miles (42km)

From Vienne you continue south along the Via Rhona, with a constantly changing backdrop throughout the day. Early on you cycle through the Ile du Beurre nature reserve, a peaceful paradise for birdwatchers and budding wildlife photographers. Shortly after this you enter the Côte Rôtie wine region and a landscape carpeted in vineyards before things change once again as you enter the verdant Ardèche countryside. You meet back up with the boat at Andance and cruise the remaining 22km to Tournon-sur-Rhone, the mooring spot for the night.

Day 4 | Cycle to Pouzin | Distance 21 miles (35km)

The captain and his crew have an early start today, cruising down to Valence before breakfast. Your cycling for the day starts here, amongst the market stalls and hustle and bustle of its historic neighborhoods. The route today takes you through a host of typical Ardèchois villages and is punctuated by some fascinating historic sites and another fantastic nature reserve. The boat will moor at Pouzin, the end point of your ride.

Day 5 | Cycle to Viviers | Distance 26 miles (42km)

Continuing south through the changing landscape of the Rhône valley, you will cycle past the medieval abbey of Cruas, a gorgeous Romanesque building lined with quirky stone carvings. A little further downstream you pass Rochemaure, where a great miniature suspension bridge takes you over the water and offers a great spot for some holiday photos. Your destination for the day is Viviers, a gorgeous town overlooking the river. Be sure to check out the spectacular cathedral, dating back to the 11th century, as well as the Maison des Chevaliers, before returning to the boat for dinner.

Day 6 | Cycle to Avignon | Distance 25 miles (40km)

After another morning cruise, this time taking you 38km to Saint-Etienne-des-Sorts. From here you hop in the saddle and make a beeline towards Châteauneuf-du-Pape, one of Frances most celebrated wine regions. The terrain here is a little hilly, but after exploring the charming village caves, things flatten out for a riverside ride into Avignon. Your first site of the city is likely to be the famous Pont d’Avignon or the vast papal palace that dominates this charming cities skyline. Please note that dinner tonight is not included to allow you to sample one of Avignon’s excellent restaurants.

Day 7 | Cycle to Arles | Distance 27 miles (44km)

Today we ride from the old home of the papacy, to the old home of one of history’s most well-known painters, Vincent Van Gogh. The ride takes you along the Via Rhona and through the picturesque harbour town of Beaucaire, a great spot to stop for a long lunch overlooking the water. From here it’s a ride through flat planes into Arles, a characterful city with a rich artistic heritage, inspired by the presence of Van Gogh in the later years of his life.

Day 8

We say au revoir. Trip extensions are available upon request.

What not to Miss

  • Sampling the produce of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Côte Rôtie wine regions.
  • Enjoying the leisurely cycling along the Via Rhona cycle route.
