Day 1 | Arrive at Bordeaux

Head to your hotel in the city centre. We suggest a walk along the river, taking in the Place des Quinconces and Place de la Bourse, with its impressive water feature. It’s such a lovely place that we recommend building your travel arrangements to allow for a free afternoon.

Day 2 | Optional Train to Arcachon and Round Trip to Dune du Pilat or Free Day in Bordeaux | Distance: 27km/17 miles

You have the choice today between spending more time exploring the city of Bordeaux or taking the train out to Arcachon (payable locally) and riding a round trip down to the highest sand dune in Europe, the Dune du Pilat. Park up your bikes in the visitor centre and take a walk up and along the dunes perfect sand for some spectacular panoramas of the Atlantic coast. The route takes you back to Arcachon via the forest on an excellent, smooth cycle path, but you may prefer to retrace your steps along the coast if the wind is favourable.

Day 3 | Cycle Bordeaux to Blaye | Distance: 49km/30 miles

Set off after breakfast to leave the city and explore the Médoc. The ride out of town, on a safe, sign-posted cycle route takes you past the spectacular Cite du Vin and the historic docks before you arrive in a sea of vines. Enjoy the ride through the Médoc, stopping off in the famous village of Margaux for a spot of lunch, before continuing on to catch the ferry over the estuary to the citadel of Blaye (payable locally).

Day 4 | Cycle Blaye to Prignac-et-Marcamps | Distance: 26km/16 miles

A shorter ride is on the cards today, meaning you have plenty of time to explore Blaye before you set off. The ride loosely follows the north bank of the Dordogne River and passes through the village of Plassac early on, where you’ll have the chance to visit a Roman villa that is home to some the best preserved mosaics in France. A little further into the day you enter the vineyards of the Côtes de Bourg appellation. Stop off in town for a taste before the final few kilometres to your charming hotel in Prignac-et-Marcamps.

Day 5 | Cycle Prignac-et-Marcamps to St Emilion | Distance: 40km/25 miles

The ride continues today with a further eastward journey, taking you into the heart of some of the worlds most prestigious vineyards. Stop for a morning coffee and cake in Saint-André-de-Cubzac, before a lunch break in the old river port town of Libourne and a final stretch through a sea of vines takes you into St Émilion. Wander the streets of this beautiful town, one of our favourites, before a delightful dinner with a glass of the local produce.

Day 6 | Optional Round Trip: Pomerol and Libourne | Distance: 40km/25 miles

You may like to spend the whole day exploring Saint Emilion, but for those eager to get back in the saddle we propose a short round trip out into the surrounding area through the Saint Emilion and Pomerol appellations. The route weaves its way up through Montagne and then west to Pomerol before you enter Libourne.

Day 7 | Cycle to Bordeaux | Distance: 47km/29 miles

The city lights are calling for your final night of the tour and a lovely cycle route will get you there. You’ll start by roughly following the Garonne before leaving the river temporarily to pick up the cycle path at Creon. From here you’ll cruise back into the city over the St Jean bridge and arrive in time to celebrate your cycling exploits with a few glasses of wine and a delicious dinner in one of France’s best foodie cities.

Day 8

We say au revoir before you return home.
