Pedalling through Burgundy

Posted 01 Jan 2016

Burgundy is totally different to Provence. Where I was cycling through olive groves, pine trees and dry scrub with the black Camargan bulls animating the fields, here the countryside is very green and covered with deciduous trees and charolais cows in the meadows. The roads are noticibly quieter.

The hills to the west of Fleurville with quiet villages nestling on the hillsides are a total contrast to the flatter rolling countryside to the east,on the other side of the river Saône.The hilly area is covered in vines and the châteaux which produce it, signs next to the vines give the 'appelation'. Whilst on the other side of the Saône fields of maize dominate.

Going south to Juliénas you are in Beaujolais country with appelations such as Fuissé, Fleurie Chénas and many more.

For an easy day from Fleurville it is possible to follow 'Ain à vélo No.1' route which is a 51km circuit through the Ain countryside but with possibilities to cut it short.I picked it up along the canal going to Pont De Vaux. For those who like something more challenging try going up to the medieval village of Brancion, about 40km there and back, passing through vineyards.I went by Lugny and Ozenay
