Your Cycling Holiday in Alsace

Classic | Alsace Route du Vin | Self Guided

Enjoy cycling along pretty lanes that meander through one vineyard after another, stopping off in historic towns bursting with colour and history, dotted all the way along the famous Alsace wine route. With spectacular scenery throughout, grapes dripping off the vines wherever you pedal, it’s easy to work up an appetite for the region’s distinctive cuisine - and a thirst for its world famous wines. Fortunately, there are plenty of superb restaurants and rustic wine bars en route, so your cycling effort will be rewarded by the region's sublime gastronomic scene.

Alsace has a distinct and rich culture, merging the very best of France and Germany. The first thing you'll notice is the distinctive timbre clad buildings in a rainbow of colours. The best part of the region is all the wine tasting experiences to be had. The Alsace wine route is world-renowned for exceptional vintages, with pinot gris being the most common grape used. Keep an eye out for Vendange Tardive and Sélection de Grains Nobles.

We love

Day 1 | Arrive at Strasbourg or Basel

Arrive at your base hotel in the centre of Strasbourg and explore this vibrant medieval city. Distinctly French and German all at once, one minute you’ll be roaming the old town’s twisting alleys and marveling at its Gothic Cathedral; the next you’ll be enjoying a glass of wine in a typical Alsatian tavern in Petite France. Then before enjoying dinner in a local restaurant, you will meet your local representative for your bike fitting and orientation.

Day 2 | Cycle Strasbourg to Obernai | Distance 26 miles (41km)

Today’s route follows ‘La Bruche’ canal cycle path, formally used to transport wine to the regional capital. On the way, we suggest a stop in Mulheim, one of the larger towns on the wine route and also home to the Bugatti museum. Then it’s on to lovely Rosheim with its splendid 12th century Romanesque church before arriving in Obernai home to ancient timbered buildings, a lovely cobbled market square and houses bursting with flowers.

Day 3 | Cycle Obernai to Dieffenthal | Distance 15 miles (25km)

Continuing south along the Rhine valley, todays ride takes you through swathes of pristine vineyards and the picturesque towns of Barr and Andlau, nestled at the foot of the Vosges. With a relatively short distance to ride, you will have ample time to explore and get under the skin of this intriguing part of Europe. Your destination is Dieffenthal, a sleepy, peaceful village on the wine route.

Day 4 | Cycle Dieffenthal to Saint Hippolyte | Distance 13 miles (20km)

Pedalling your way along the Route de Vins through more glorious vineyards, with the Vosges mountains and hilltop castles in view, there are plenty of opportunities to stop off to taste some delicious local wines. A stop for explorations and perhaps lunch in historic Selestat, is highly recommended en route to Saint Hippolyte with its beautiful half-timbered houses from the 16th and 17th Centuries and views onto the vineyards.

Day 5 | Cycle Saint Hippolyte to Kientzheim | Distance 14 miles (22km)

Revered vineyards and a string of enchanting medieval villages, including Ribeauvillé, gorgeous Riquewihr,  Turckheim and Eguisheim are on the route today, situated at the foot of the Vosges mountains. The route then heads towards Kientzheim, a charming small town of cobbled streets and half timber houses. A visit to the wine museum here is highly recommended.

Day 6 | Departure

Enjoy your last petit dejeuner before we say “au revoir.”

Day 2 | Round trip to Saverne | Distance 30 miles (48km)

After breakfast, your first cycle of the holiday will take you along a flat bike path out of Strasbourg to the medieval town of Saverne, following the Canal of the Rhine which leads to the Rhone. Along the way there are plenty of opportunities to stop off for a coffee or a delicious tarte flambee in one of the typical Alsatian villages before reaching Saverne nestled up by vine covered hills. Enjoy a stroll around the town to see the half-timbered houses and the Castle of Rohan before taking the train (included) back to Strasbourg.

Day 7 | Cycle Kientzheim to Colmar | Distance 17 miles (28km)

An easy ride, mostly on a slight downhill, takes you into Colmar a city bursting at the seems with character. It's centre is criss-crossed by canals, lined with bold, colourful half timber houses. We recommend arriving here in time for lunch at a canalside bistro before a walk around the town in the afternoon. Colmar is known as the capital of Alsatian wines, so an evening tasting here is the perfect way to end your tour.
