“On our last full day of cycling, we planned our route so as to arrive in Chateauneuf sur Charente for lunch. As we approached, some police cars sped past us, lights flashing and we realised that unusually, people were standing about chatting and looking expectant. As we neared the centre, there were even more people and we saw that they were smiling broadly at us and waving and calling out. We were rather puzzled and decided to wait and see what was happening. Within half an hour, accompanied by more police cars, sponsors cars and press cars, WHOOSH!, the contestants in the Poitiers-Charente cycle race flashed past. At last we understood the locals' amusement at us when we appeared! ”

“Just had a long call from Pam Buckham, saying they had a wonderful trip in Cognac. Weather was iffy on some days but they thought the hotels were about the best combination they have experienced in France, the hoteliers charming (and a bonus for them that most spoke English and had time to chat when things were quiet), and they found Dave a super assistant who got the bikes tuned perfectly, made sure they had the softer saddles as requested and rode out with them the first day to make sure all was working well. St Preuil and St Catherine's, Montbron were their favourites she said. Overall a great success! And I have reminded myself to encourage more people to try that area too, as it is not an obvious one South Africans would consider without some recommendation. ”
