“It was everything I had ever dreamt of - freedom to cycle in absolutely beautiful countryside, pretty villages, friendly people, different food, new experiences. The fun that can be had with conversations in single word French and English if you get lost (we did heaps of times!) - you will always eventually get to the destination! So many lovely, enchanting and funny times as two, mature, Aussie ladies cycled off to explore la Venise Verte. We always got lost, our route each day probably doubled - but, we always arrived and had such fun getting there. When we left Celles sur Belle we did well until Fors - then the roads became confused - or we did! With sign language and the phrase book, I asked a woman gardening to show us the correct route. We were invited in with her two daughters and their friend for a drink. The 11year old was having English lessons for one hour each week - very excited and keen to have Australians to practise on - out came the books. Jennifer saying the lesson in English and me in French. Their surprise cam when Jill and * could sing 'Frere Jacques' whilst they sang 'Brother Jack'. Great start. ”

“How much time do you have? We shared a house with an owl and an owner who gave us not just the free run of her garden but her punt as well. We met people who took time and real pleasure in showing us the way to our next place and we always found correcting the 'you're English?' with 'no, we're Scottish' went down well. We found a bus driver who wouldn't take our money and then met us on return from La Rochelle to repeat his refusal. We were protected from phones, faxes and work by the gentle turning of a bicyle wheel. Thank you once again. ”
